The apartment is situated on ground floor of an apartment block built in the beginning of 1990s. The refurbishment addressed the need of creating an extra bedroom in the relatively spacious 2-bedroom apartment. The existing master bedroom became new bedroom for the clients’ daughter – a first year grammar school student. A new hotel-style master bedroom with ensuite bathroom was created in the existing kitchen and dining room. The original apartment layout was based around a central hall used as workspace. After removing the partitions, the hall was integrated with the living room, creating a united space filled with light, where the family can gather and receive guests. A large window overlooking the front garden with deep parapet strengthens the ‘living’ character of the space, framing the new linear living room. The parapet has become a popular spot for children to play and parents to relax. During film evenings, the roller blind fixed above the window serves as a projection screen. Surface finishes are treated with natural materials; white render or light coloured wood, resin floor and modular furniture made of plywood.

The owner of this village house in Slovakia had a dream that many of us share: “I want to live in a small house on a small plot at a reasonable price.” Of course reasonable price is subjective based on personal circumstances, but in this case the available budget was €75,000. Architecture studio JRKVC helped make her dream a reality, looking to rural Slovakian folk houses for time-tested ideas that could be applied to a new affordable house.

Those traditional country houses tended to be small and simple structures with a covered porch. They were built from readily available materials and the windows were kept small to reduce heat loss in winter. JRKVC incorporated those concepts with one major twist. While the windows facing the neighboring houses were kept small for privacy, the back gable was completely glazed, offering a view of a farmer’s field and filling the home with diffuse northern light. Because the glazed wall does face north, it was made with triple-paned insulating glass.

Modular Summer Cottages – Lykke + Nielsen

Modular Summer Cottages – Lykke + Nielsen

The Danish architectural firm Lykke + Nielsen has launched a side business building modular summer cottages. Created from a simple modular template, the houses can be in place within six months of ordering, configured to fit the buyer’s needs. Mix and match room modules—a bedroom, a kitchen/bath, a living room—and join them by adding a breezeway module.

Here are two examples from the Lykke + Nielsen portfolio that caught our eye. To learn more, go to Moen Huset. Now we just need an architect in the US to riff off this idea, and we’ll be all set.
